In the beginning of the series Carol is the weak and fragile female character. She is oppressed by her abusive husband, Ed. After the death of Ed she takes on more responsibility and becomes a stronger woman. Especially after Sophia’s death, we see a change in Carol’s character. She puts on a more fearless attitude and since she no longer has anyone but herself to take care of, she dares and acts no longer fragile. Both the death of Ed and Sophia has slowly taken some of the fear out of her character. It almost seems as if she is ready to take her revenge on “the walkers”.
The recklessness that she develops is clearly a trait, which the audience can identify with. When you experience losing your entire family something happens and breaks inside yourself. The survival instinct takes over. Especially this and the understanding of her pain make Carol one of the female characters that the audience can identify with. You understand her development and after all she has gone through, she becomes one of the characters that you are rooting for. She is independent, honest and just a cool character to follow.
